Not to sound dramatic, but this smoothie recipe will change your life. Or at least your morning, afternoon or whenever you favor a tasty pick-me-up treat. This smoothie is just as whimsical and pretty as it is nutritious and filling.
I have a complete obsession with beverages of all kinds. I’m kind of a coffee connoisseur, love a good iced tea, can’t live without ice cold lemon water and am always experimenting with new smoothie recipes. Since it’s the middle of summer, I’ve recently been experimenting with a collagen protein smoothie recipe for lunch for extra energy and less time cooking in the middle of a work day.
I wanted to step up my smoothie game and try the fancy layered ombré style I see people showing off on their food blogs and perfectly curated instagrams. I’m not going to lie to you, I haven’t quite mastered this technique. What kind of witchcraft are these people using that their colored smoothie parts lay perfectly on top of one another without mixing?
As you can tell, mine didn’t come out ready for a shoot in Good Housekeeping but it’s not terribly ugly. Even though I haven’t mastered the layering technique, the important part is I have mastered the recipe and taste. I’ll obviously channel my inner Martha and keep practicing because presentation is everything. I hear the trick is to freeze each layer just enough to set a little bit before adding the next. Maybe I’ll give it a go for when I’m hosting, but for lunch, I think it’s okay that it’s not instagram-worthy.
Butterfly Tea Smoothie Recipe That Will Give You Wings:
Brown layer:
- 1/2 cup oat milk
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 2 scoops vital protein powder (or your protein powder of choice)
- 1 heaping tbsp. of cacao powder
Beige layer:
- 1/2 cup oat milk
- 1/2 frozen banana
- Spoonful of almond butter
- 1/2 tbsp. maca powder
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Blue layer:
- 1/2 cup oat milk
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup iced butterfly pea tea
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
Starting with the brown layer, place all of the ingredients in the blender. Always start with liquids at the bottom. Blend until the ingredients reach a thick, creamy consistency, adding more liquid if needed. Use a mason jar or your favorite cup to empty the brown layer first, then the beige and top it off with the blue layer. If you want to be a true professional, freeze each layer just enough so it sets before adding the next. You can garnish with coconut flakes, chia seeds, or any other topping of your choice. So refreshing and satisfies like a dessert! Enjoy!
