I have a complete obsession with beverages of all kinds. I’m a coffee connoisseur, love a good iced tea, can’t live without lemon water, and always experiment with new smoothie recipes. Since it’s the middle of summer, I’ve recently been experimenting with a beauty-enhancing protein smoothie recipe for lunch for extra energy and less time cooking in the middle of a workday.
I wanted to step up my smoothie game and try the fancy layered ombré style that looks as exciting as it tastes. The trick to creating separate colors is to freeze each layer just enough to set it as a base for the next layer to sit on. You can do this by adding a ratio of more frozen fruit to liquid or just setting your smoothie in the freezer for 10 minutes or so, depending on your smoothie’s temperature and starting texture.
Butterfly Tea Smoothie Recipe That Will Give You Wings:
Brown layer:
- 1/3 cup coconut milk (or enough to get the mix blended)
- 1/3 frozen banana
- 2 scoops Truvani protein powder (or your protein powder of choice)
- 2 heaping tbsp. of cacao powder
Beige layer:
- 1/3 cup coconut milk
- 1/3 frozen banana
- A spoonful of almond butter
- 1/2 tbsp. maca powder
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Blue layer:
- 1/3 cup coconut water
- 1/3 frozen banana
- 1 scoop of butterfly pea powder
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
Place all ingredients in the blender, starting with the brown layer. Always start with liquids at the bottom. Blend until the ingredients reach a thick, creamy consistency, adding more liquid if needed. Use a large glass or favorite cup to empty the brown layer first, then the beige, and top it off with the blue layer. If you want to be a true professional, freeze each layer just enough so it sets before adding the next. You can garnish with coconut flakes, chia seeds, or any other topping you choose.
Butterfly pea flower tea has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia and Ayurvedic medicine and cuisine. It contains potent antioxidants, which we all know reduce free radical stress. This tea isn’t only good for beauty but helps protect against cellular damage, balance insulin levels, and alleviate inflammation. It’s been popularized because of its hair-strengthening properties, and Southeast Asian women swear by it to help grow long, strong, glossy locks. The tea flowers also contain a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which plays a role in the brain’s cognitive function and memory. There’s no beauty without brains!
It’s also so refreshing and satisfying, like a dessert! Cheers!
