So, you want some classy airport outfits? You’re in good company. I’m obsessed with dressing appropriately for the occasion, which is basically how you dress classy. Doing so is not only incredibly elegant but it can also boost your mood. Better moods lead to better days.
Nowadays when traveling, most people throw on sweats or a pair of leggings and call it a day. Sometimes, this is our best option. We’ll have a long flight or haven’t slept and just need to get from point A to point B. However, I think that there’s something indescribable about dressing our best that allows us to step into who we want to be. It makes an enormous difference in the way we feel. And while traveling, we all want to feel our best.
We want to feel and be our best while traveling, so we’re here to make that happen. You can look and feel incredible even on your path to somewhere else with simple guidelines and tips.
This post is all about how to create classy airport outfits.
Comfort and Style Do Not Have To Be Mutually Exclusive While Traveling
I think most people have the perception that style and comfort cannot exist simultaneously, thus forcing them to pick one over the other. I promise you, you can have style while being comfortable. In my opinion, you look even more stylish when you’re comfortable. Have you ever seen someone walking on cobblestone or in an airport with platform heels? It doesn’t look appropriate and can make it look like they’re trying too hard. In order to cultivate classy airport outfits, we need to consider the occasion, and the occasion requires comfort. You will most likely be walking and sitting a lot, so you should feel loose and unconstrained by your clothing. In stressful moments, we need to simplify the things we have control over.
Comfort is actually my main priority with clothes. When I’m feeling comfortable in my clothes, I feel more confident and relaxed. I can focus more on my presence, conversations, and tasks over wardrobe malfunctions. When I shop, I usually run my hand against all the clothes on the racks and will only pick up the ones that are tactilely pleasant. This is all to say that, I will never try to convince you that looking good is more important than feeling good. It all starts and ends with how we feel.
So, yes, comfort is important while traveling. We’re on our feet a lot, walking in airports and sitting in cabs, buses, and airplanes so we need to be functional. But I think traveling in style can elevate us and brings intention into our travels. It’s a very special time when we have the privilege of going somewhere new or different and it should be celebrated and appreciated.
So, how do we achieve comfort and classiness? Again, it’s all about the fabric, but it’s also about the cut and the pieces we’re putting together.
I’m a trouser over jeans type of person. Not only do they elevate and differentiate you from every other person wearing blue jeans, but trousers come in so many different cuts, shapes, and materials. If you get a pair that has stretch to it, they can feel like structured leggings while looking more put together than a pair of jeans. So, I’m a big fan of wearing black trousers while I travel.
Here are some examples of how you can wear trousers while traveling for comfort and style.
Other fabrics that are comfortable to wear are silk, cashmere and wool blends, spandex, acrylic, and linen. Depending on the season, of course.
If it’s winter or you’re traveling to a cold destination, wearing cashmere sweaters and knit pants can be so cozy on the plane. They’re comfortable and warm enough to cuddle up and (hopefully) fall asleep on your plane ride. They’re also incredibly timeless looking and are great staples to have on any cold, snowy vacation.
In warmer months, or on trips to warm destinations, wearing silk is practical and so stylish. Silk button-down blouses are a go-to of mine in any season because of the fabric’s temperature regulating properties. It keeps your body temperature comfortable and optimal, making it a favorable choice for cabin air.
Wear Your Larger Accessories While Skipping Jewelry for Hassle-Free Traveling
When going through security, the last thing you want to do is hold up the line or cause yourself a delay by taking off and putting on jewelry. I always keep my jewelry in a box in my carry-on or purse. A hot tip is to pack jewelry polishing cloths in your purse or carry on so you can shine your jewelry on the plane when looking for something to do. It’s kind of relaxing and a good way to get something done you otherwise don’t have time for.

Wearing hats and scarves, though, is a great way to make space in your luggage and to look fabulous. I love the old vintage looks of women traveling with hats on and feel like it’s so polished. It’s a great way to take your favorite floppy hat on a beach vacation without wrinkling it in your suitcase as well.
Accessories like hats and scarves can instantly boost your style but are so easy to throw back on after going through security. It’s usually the bulkiest of accessories we have as well, so that’s precious suitcase space that frees up for some more clothes ๐
Classy Airport Outfits Require The Appropriate Shoes
Airplanes can be quite unpredictable when it comes to their temperate. I always find them to be extremely cold and like to have my feet covered for that reason. In the summer months, I still have my toes covered by wearing sneakers, mules, or ballet flats. I also find a good, comfortable shoe to be a travel necessity. There’s nothing worse than running to your gate in shoes that are rigid and swell with blisters or inflammation.
I love wearing knee-high or over-the-knee boots for my winter travels because it adds another layer to my legs, keeping me warm, while also looking quite expensive. Always make sure your shoe is flat, you never want to walk the airport in heels if given a choice.
Classy Airport Outfits Don’t Include Extreme Fashion Statements
While we want to look extremely fabulous and maybe a little rich while traveling, the airport or any high-traffic public place probably isn’t the best time to make your most artistic fashion choices. Listen, I’m all for a good peacocking moment, but I think there’s a time and a place to do it and I’m just not sure traveling is that time.
While exposing yourself to so many strangers, you really want to keep a low profile. You don’t want to cause unnecessary attention to yourself with loud logos, expensive designer pieces, or nouveau riche type outfits. We want to look expensive, without giving people an obvious nod that we have something they might want. Not only can this cause distraction when you’re in a high-stakes environment, but it can actually increase your chances of being caught up in a bad situation.
You never know who’s out there and what they’re looking for, so especially if you’re a woman traveling alone, never dress to bring attention to yourself while traveling through airports. You don’t want someone getting ideas about what you might have to offer that they would want to take. Even if you do have money, the airport is not the place to show it off. There are a lot of crazy people in the world, so let’s look discrete enough that we’re not allowing ourselves to be a target.
I also think dressing discretely is more appropriate for creating classy airport outfits. Given the environment and situation, we would look and feel out of place if overdressed. We are about to sit for potentially hours on an aircraft, which isn’t the time to make fashion statements. Leave the runways for the planes while traveling and you’ll look and feel much more tasteful. You can look nice without breaking out the latest couture or fashion statement.
I think when we stick to the classics while traveling, we not only look classier but we feel classier because we are truly dressed for the occasion.
This post was all about tips on putting together classy airport outfits, what not to wear to the airport and why we should put effort into our traveling looks.
